If you are at a time where you are considering a nursing home for your loved one then you are in a difficult mindset. Most stigmas on nursing homes are those of when caregiver can no longer take care of their loved ones and they have to go to a nursing home. This post will outline some of the most common misconceptions about nursing homes.
Myth #1:
If you’re in a wheelchair you have to go to a nursing home. WRONG.
You can absolutely cruise around in your wheelchair at the assisted living, they will all have ramps or elevators to get you where you’re going.
Myth #2:
You have dementia so you must live in the nursing home. WRONG.
Some assisted living facilities have secured units for memory care or those prone to wandering. You might just have “wander” in and ask.
Myth #3:
At an assisted living you have to remember to take your medicine. WRONG.
Although they cannot give you the medicine, they can remind you to take your medicine when it is time.
Myth #4
Once you go to a “facility” you’ll never get to leave. WRONG.
It isn’t a prison!! Both types of facilities will require you to return to the facility prior to the day being over but you can visit family or go to the store as you need. SNF’s will just have a stricter policy depending on if someone needs more help.
Myth #5
You have to share a room. WRONG…But it will cost ya.
Almost all facilities offer a private room rate, but just like your college dorm room it will be much more expensive to have live privately.
Myth #6
You have back problems and can’t put on your socks, must mean you don’t qualify for an ALF. WRONG.
Some ALF’s have what is called “leveled care” or extra services that can be provided. You wouldn’t want them to be walking around with their pants on the ground!!
**Streaking is frowned upon in nursing homes.
Myth #7
Facilities are boring with nothing to do. WRONG.
What? Movies, bingo, cards, shopping, sounds more fun than my day!
Obviously still check out the facilities in your area, see if they are a fit!
The information you need…Straight UP!
